In creating my collagraph prints, I utilize experiences available to me with a diverse array of materials and techniques to create a visual feast. I draw inspiration from the beauty of the Pacific, the rolling vineyards of France, the patches of tulip farms in Holland, from the intensity and colors of India, and the urban and suburban landscapes of California. These impressions are combined on my inked plates with handmade papers collected from Japan, France, India, Nepal and Thailand. I cut, scratch, adhere, mold and manipulate materials onto my plates without conventional limitations. By producing prints using everyday mundane materials, I am placing my work in an entirely new context, with the goal of challenging and changing the viewer’s perceptions. In an age of extremes, wealth and poverty, peace and discord, technology and ecology, my art strives for a universal landscape of harmony, blending cultural decorative motifs, color, texture and pattern.
The content of my work is inspired by the relevance of cross cultural and historical story and myth and how it is relevant in today’s world. I’m interested in how we rely on these stories to make sense of our lives and the light in which we view the world’s problems. As I research elements that find their way into my work what holds my interest is how they are timeless ideas that are also universal. I aspire to push the boundaries of my medium. Woodcut is a constant element in my work, as I love the carving, feel and expressive quality of the wood. It is a connection to the earth and to the history of communication. Each new block carries forth from the blocks before but something new is added to the story, marking my woodblock figures in the way we tattoo our bodies.
Bob began his career during the
burgeoning of the print workshops in 1970. He worked at Impressions Workshop in
Boston and at the Printshop in Amsterdam Netherlands. He earned a B.F.A. from
University of Massachusetts and M.F.A. from Syracuse University. A faculty member at the Fine Arts Work Center
in Provincetown, Mass. and member of The Boston Printmakers since 1986, his
lithographs are included in collections here and abroad. In 2009 he was the
co-winner of The Dayton Peace Museums International Peace Prize for The Arts. He
participated in the London Liberal Arts College, "Year of Subversion
Exhibition” in 2013. His essays have appeared in the Print Alliance
Journal,"Prints and Politics", Visual Overture Magazine, and the
Bangalore Review. Other writing has appeared in Literal Minded, Orange Alert,
Shine Journal, Askew Reviews, Glossolalia, Creative Writing Now, Blinking
