Born in Pampa, Texas, Andis Applewhite lives and works in Houston. She is known for her screen and wood relief prints that tend toward the abstract expressionist or mini-malist styles. After graduating San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas, with a degree in graphic arts, Applewhite soon found her voice in printmaking. She is an elected Member of the Los Angeles Printmaking Society, California Society of Printmakers and PrintMatters Houston. Her print “No Other” is included in the CSP Centennial Book in honor of their 100th anniversary and was asked to be donated to the Library of Congress. Her work is being archived in the Artist Printmaker Research Collection, Museum of TexasTech University, Lubbock, TX. Applewhite is a founding and key board member of PrintMatters and PrintHouston.
In order to make a print I will work from my sketches I made of ordinary people in a variety of circumstances as well as drawings from a model or some experience in my life. My prints are about feelings and states of mood, about dreams and expectations. Often I express them through the female figure. I play a roleof narrator and storyteller but I encourage the viewer to approach the piece with his or her unique experience or memory. I enjoy working with relief and intaglio technique as well as monotype. Frequently I like to combine multiple styles and methods to create my own style. Lately I have explored the art of handmade artists’ books as a flexible medium with a wide range of artistic expression and a creative way how to utilize my prints.
Raised in the open ranch land of Northern New Mexico, Leon developed an affinity for the Southwestern landscape. He was greatly influenced by his grandmother’s involvement in Northern New Mexico art circles. Later study at the Colorado Institute of Art along with private study reinforced his abilities. Stationed in Germany while in the army, he was able to travel extensively throughout Europe, visiting museums and maintaining sketching journals. In addition, he studied painting techniques of the old masters for two years, finishing by copying a Franz Hals at the Stuttgart Stattsgalerie Art Museum. Long having an interest in pen and ink, etching took on a special meaning from the museum’s collection of etchings.On his return to Colorado, Leon began to study the intaglio techniques and selling the prints in mountain galleries. In 1998, Leon purchased his first letterpress and received immediate success with the woodblock prints he produced. The layering of color in the woodblock process allowed him to better capture the atmospheric qualities of the Southwestern Landscape that have such a strong meaning for him.Leon has continued to develop his printmaking skills and currently owns a publishing company, producing his Reduction Style Woodblocks as well as limited edition books. His woodblocks are exhibited nationally and collected by numerous museums. He and his wife also own a gilding studio, producing and restoring hand carved gold leaf frames for museums and collectors.
